General

The Gladiateur, designed by the British architects Kim Holman and Don Pye is one of a number of successful models built by the Wauquiez yard in northern France. Some 280 Gladiateurs were built with Cordon Bleu being hull no 80. 


Particular features which account for the popularity of the Gladiateur are worth mentioning: 


Very easy handling and manoeuvrable, both under sail an power . Under motor she goes ahead and astern with precision and stern first into a tight marina berth is easily achieved. 


The hull shape with a fairly deep forefoot and V section hull shape ensures easy, comfortable upwind progress with a noted lack of slamming and consequent spray on deck. 


The cockpit is large with angled deep sides making her comfortable and secure under way and also allowing for plenty of room for socializing in harbour. 


A lead fin keel is fitted and secured with stainless steel keel bolts. A deep bilge ensures a dry boat, even when heeled, as well as stiffness from a low centre of gravity. 


The deep full depth skeg ensures directional stability and the boat can be trimmed to sail herself upwind with hands off the tiller for long periods. 


 The deck layout is designed for easy handling with Cordon Bleu brought up to date by having halyards and reefing lines led aft to the cockpit for safety.


 


Deck Hardware

Deck mounted winches: Primary winches: 2 x Lewmar 44, 2 speed self-tailing, with coaming-mounted turning blocks, spinnaker sheets: 2 x Lewmar 30, 2 speed, genoa halyard Lewmar 2 speed, reefing lines: 2 x Lewmar 40s on deck with sheave blocks leading lines aft. Kicker/vang 1x Lewmar 9.




Mast winches : genoa halyard  1 x Lewmar 16, 2 speed, spinnaker halyard 1 x Lewmar single speed. 


Spars

Proctor mast, Windex, LED nav lights on mast.
Kemp/Selden boom with internal reefing lines and outhaul and integral jammers.
Rotostay genoa furler - uses spinnaker sheet winch. 


Sails

Fore and aft sails by Peter Sanders of Lymington.
Mainsail (2019) with tapered battens and 3 reefs.
Genoa (2018) 130% with foam luff and blue sacrificial UV strip.
NB: both sails have seen little use and are in ‘as new’ condition.
Cruising chute by Momentum Sails c/w snuffer. Red and black panels, (Used 5 times only).
Dark blue sprayhood with windscreen protection against UV.
Dodgers with name Cordon Bleu. 


Running Rigging

Main halyard and genoa halyards in low-stretch rope new 2018, spinnaker halyard. New mainsheet 2019.


 Engine

Volvo D1-30 26hp 3-cylinder diesel with Saildrive (new2012) and folding prop.
Engine No 5102139229V c/w engine manual. Engine hours 448 @ 16th July 2020. 115 amp alternator.
Engine fresh water cooled with hot water supply to galley and heads.
Engine installed, winterized and serviced by Ateliers Navals de la Couronne at La Roche Bernard and boat lifted for storage ashore every autumn.
2 x 95 a/h 12v batteries new 2020. Sterling 1230 battery charger. 


Below deck layout

Forecabin with 2 V Berths (6’4”) with infill, stowage under.
Heads compartment with WC and washbasin H&C and showerhead on taps.
Saloon 2 x 6’4”: berths with lee cloths. Portside berth can convert into double.
Starboard side :(so- called 7th pilot berth), might suit a child but in reality a very useful stowage with lee-cloth to keep stuff secure.
Stowage outboard of saloon berths seatbacks.
Portside aft, large chart table to take ½  Admiralty charts with chart stowage under, and double navigator’s  bench seat.. Ample instrument space with Apelco VHF radio (cockpit speaker and emergency aerial). Quarter berth behind.
Drinks locker with cutouts for bottles.
Glasses stowage locker with cutouts with (supplied) wine and spirit glasses.
Bookcase and stowage below.
Starboard side aft, galley with gimbaled Plastimo Neptune 2000 gas cooker, 2 burner hob, oven and grill, crash bar and cook’s belt.
Refrigerated icebox with ice making facility. Waeco fridge compressor in stbd cockpit locker.
Hot and cold pressure water from 2 x150 litre Plastimo flexible water tanks.
Ample stowage at galley for (supplied) crockery for 6 with peg locators and (supplied) cutlery for 6. Drawer for all (supplied) galley requisites.
S/S teapot and insulated coffee percolator.
6 china mugs (supplied) in cut-out stowage.
Pans (supplied) in stowage below cooker includes rectangular frying pan (a real discovery).

Cordon Bleu – Owners’ notes



We have been the happy owners of Cordon Bleu for 20 years and have enjoyed some wonderful times sailing in her.  She is a true Classic.  Many French sailors have commented “C’est un vrai bateau”  -  “That’s a Proper Yacht”.  We wouldn’t disagree. 


When we bought her from the second owner from new, she had not been brought up to date in terms of sail handling equipment, electronics, and practical comforts down below. 


For example you will see on many Gladiateurs that the original mainsail reefing system consisted of a tiny winch on the boom, which the crew had to work as well as easing the main halyard at the mast, while all the while hanging on to the boat with the other (?) hand. Not a good system. 


We tried it only once. We changed to a modern Kemp/Selden boom and led all lines and the main halyard back to the cockpit, so no one had to leave the cockpit to reef. Altogether a safer option. 


We have done lots of other modifications over the years to make life on board easier. 


The boat is all set and ready to go.  The in-water berth in la Roche Bernard is paid for until the end of 2020.
 



We hope the new owner will enjoy Cordon Bleu as much as we have done for many years to come.

We have known the owners for over 30 years. A veteran of Westerly and Sadler, knowledgeable, experienced and conscientious. Cordon Bleu has been properly maintained and updated and it is turnkey condition.



Inventaire et Commentaires



Le Gladiateur, conçu par les architectes britanniques Kim Holman et Don Pye est l’un des gros succès du chantier Wauquiez dans le nord de la France. Quelque 280 Gladiateurs ont été construits, Cordon Bleu étant la coque no 80. 


Des caractéristiques particulières qui expliquent la popularité du Gladiateur méritent d’être mentionnées : 


Très facile et maniable à la manœuvre, sous voiles ou moteur. Sous moteur, en marche avant et arrière donnant confiance dans les ports serrés.


La forme de la coque avec un avant-pied assez profond et la forme de la coque en V assure un comportement aisé et confortable au près avec peu de tangage et donc peu de vagues sur le pont. 


Le cockpit est grand avec des hiloires profondes inclinés ce qui la rend confortable et sûre en mer et permet également beaucoup d’espace pour socialiser dans le port.


Une quille en plomb, fixée par des boulons de quille en acier inoxydable. Une cale profonde assure un bateau sec, même lorsqu’il est gité, ainsi que la rigidité d’un centre de gravité bas. 


Le skeg profonde pleine profondeur assure la stabilité directionnelle et le bateau peut presque naviguer lui-même au près en lachant la barre pendant de longues périodes.


La disposition du pont est conçue pour faciliter les manœuvres et Cordon Bleu a été mis à jour avec les drisses et bosses de ris renvoyés dans le cockpit pour la sécurité.


 


Pont

Winchs d’écoute de génois : 2 x Lewmar 44, 2 vitesses self-tailing, sur hiloires, écoutes de spinnaker: 2 x Lewmar 30, 2 vitesses, drisse de GV Lewmar 2 vitesses, bosses de ris: 2 x Lewmar 40s sur le roof. Hale bas de bôme 1x Lewmar 9.


Winchs de mât : drisse de génois 1 x Lewmar 16, 2 vitesses, drisse de spinnaker 1 x Lewmar vitesse unique.

Cordon Bleu – Commentaires des propriétaires



Nous sommes les heureux propriétaires de Cordon Bleu depuis 20 ans et ont apprécié beaucoup de moments merveilleux sous voile.  C’est une vraie classique.  Beaucoup de marins Français ont commenté « C’est un vrai bateau ».  Nous ne serions pas en désaccord.


Lorsque nous l’avons achetée au deuxième propriétaire, il n’avait pas été mise à jour en termes d’équipement de pont, d’électronique et de confort intérieur.


On n’a essayé qu’une fois avec l’ancienne système de prise de ris!. Nous avons changé pour une bôme moderne Kemp / Selden et a ramenées toutes les lignes et la drisse de GV au cockpit, donc personne n’a plus besoin quitter le cockpit pour réduire la toile, une option plus sûre. 


Nous avons fait beaucoup d’autres modifications au fil des ans pour faciliter la vie à bord. 


Le bateau est prêt à partir.  Le place de ponton à la Roche Bernard est payé jusqu’à fin 2020.
 



Nous espérons que le nouveau propriétaire appréciera Cordon Bleu autant que nous l’avons fait et pendant de nombreuses années à venir.
